The most recent unemployment rate of 9.8% continues to trend upward, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. But there is some good news: Certain professions such as accounting, pharmacy and nursing aren't only secure, they're thriving in this economy. Here, 10 Teflon-coated jobs, all of which are strengthened by social trends (aging baby boomers) and economic necessities (greening of the economy) as well as educational and professional licensing and requirements.

1. Accountants and Auditors

Why it's secure: Thanks to ever-changing government regulations and an increased scrutiny of company finances, someone needs to ensure the rising number of public records are accurate. Not to mention taxes, taxes, taxes.

Education: At minimum, accountants and auditors must earn a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.

Certification: In order to file with the Securities and Exchange Commission, an accountant must be a certified public accountant.

2. Computer Analysts/Systems Analysts

Why it's secure: Since every company requires technology, and technology keeps changing, computer and systems experts are here to stay.

Education: A B.S. in computer science, information science or management information systems.

Certification: Although there isn't a licensing requirement, per se, employers typically want their analysts to possess education and experience.

3.Environmental Scientists and Hydrologists

Why it's secure: According to the Department of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH), this profession is thriving, as hiring is anticipated to increase by 25% through 2016.

Education: A master's degree is the minimum educational requirement for most entry-level positions. A doctoral degree is usually necessary for most research positions and teaching at the university level.

Certification: Certification via the American Institute of Hydrology, for example, is often helpful but not required.

4. Lawyers

Why it's secure: As certain sectors such as health care, energy and the environment continue to grow, job stability remains rock solid, as they will need legal services. According to the OOH, growth is expected to be 11% through 2016.

Education: Three years of law school. Advanced law degrees may be essential for people who want to teach, specialize or conduct research.

Certification: In order to practice law in the courts, a lawyer must be admitted to a state bar. Most states also require prospective attorneys to pass an ethics exam.

5. Pharmacists

Why it's secure: According to the OOH, employment is expected to grow by 22% through 2016. Job stability and growth may be attributed to the aging population who rely on prescription drugs along with greater specialization in the field.

Education: A Pharm.D. (doctor of pharmacy) degree must be earned from an accredited college or pharmacy school, typically four years of study.

Certification: Prospective pharmacists must pass the North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam (NAPLEX).
