How to sack an employee who never makes a mistake?

My company is experiencing an unprecedented downsizing process, many are being forced to leave their posts, thus giving rise to lots disputes and rows between the sacked and employer representatives(HR, Line managers etc.). Witnessing what is happening and feeling what mistakes should have been avoided, I have a say as follows: 

If the employee has never made any mistake, he should not be fired - which is a punishment action. Instead he should be 'terminated' from his work contract under a separation program.


Employees who never make mistakes are as vulnerable as poor performers when companies face challenges (business downturn, change of business model or more frequently, under M & A situations). If the separation is through no fault of the employee, he should be given his proper entitlements for normal separations, such as notice payments, compensation for past service years, etc. Be a bit more generous than the minimal legal provision if you can afford, and this can maintain good will.

The separation should be conducted in a professional manner, preferably delivered to the employee in a face to face meeting with the employee's immediate superior and an HR representative. A consistent reason should be given and be careful to explain that the separation is a business decision rather than a decision faulting the employees. Ask what help he or she may need (assistance to find new jobs, referral letters etc) and leave a contact person that he may approach at later stages (e.g. for positive reference if this is appropriate).
